Maru Aponte

Maru Aponte’s artistic journey unfolds through the dynamic exploration of watercolour as a contemporary medium. Intense colour emerges as a pivotal element in her work. This saturation reflects the intrinsic qualities of the medium as well as the vibrant palette of her home territory, the Puerto Rican archipelago. Her paintings resonate as a visceral representation of the Caribbean experience—beautiful, cacophonous and authentic. Solo exhibitions include Moontalker (2024) at Galería Agustina Ferreyra in Mexico City; Con mil ojos de espuma (2023) at Souvenir 154 in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Lo Que Sueñan Los Pájaros (2022) at Embajada in San Juan. Aponte was a resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (2024) and received a Griffin x ECU Fellowship Studio Award (2023) at Griffin Arts Projects in North Vancouver, BC. She recently graduated with an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC.
